Low temperatures caused damage to fruit trees

The low temperatures that prevailed this morning on 21.04.2016 have caused significant damage to the fruit growing sector.

Based on data from meteorological stations of the Kosovo Agricultural Development Initiative (IADK) located in Postovë of Vushtrri, temperatures have dropped to -2.8^°C, while in Vaganica of Mitrovica it has dropped to -2.3^°C.

As a result of these temperatures and based on field visits to orchards by experts from IADK, the fruits of the newly formed trees have been damaged by 10-80%.

The greatest damage has been caused to trees that have formed fruits and those in the process of forming, such as apples, pears, plums, strawberries, etc.

These damages will greatly affect farmers' incomes this year, but the consequences will be felt in the coming years as well, leading to the emergence of an alternative large farm.

Based on data and experience in horticulture, the intensity of damage depends on low temperatures, the phenophase in which the orchard is located as p.sh: newly formed fruits can be damaged at -1.1^{°C at}-2.2°C at -2.2^°C, while newly formed flowers canbe damaged at -3.9°C^.

These damages will be felt most by Kosovo's orchards, who with great effort and sacrifices have built orchards, so this is the last moment for all responsible authorities and Kosovo's farmers to consider securing agricultural production from natural disasters: hail, floods, low temperatures, etc.
