Study Visit to Germany for Advancing Practices in the Livestock and Food Processing Sectors

As part of the project "Improving the employment and income generation opportunities in rural areas in Kosovo" organization IADK, in collaboration with expert Dr. Alfred Petri from the Senior Expert Service (SES), carried out a study visit to the Bavaria region of Germany from June 4–7, 2025.
The main objective of the visit was to gain first-hand insights into the German dual education system, which combines theoretical learning with practical training in specialized farms and laboratories. The visit also aimed to identify successful practices that can be adapted to the livestock and food processing sectors in Kosovo. During the visit, meetings were held with educational and research institutions, and participants visited model farms and dairy processing units.
Among the most advanced practices presented were: robotic milking systems with integrated technology for monitoring cow health, equipment for rapid milk cooling through heat exchange systems, efficient management and feeding systems for calves and cows, as well as a holistic approach to animal welfare. The importance of renewable energy use in farms was also highlighted, including solar panels, biogas systems, and heating through sustainably managed wood biomass.
This study visit served as a valuable experience for expanding the professional knowledge of IADK staff and strengthening opportunities for inter-institutional cooperation in the fields of vocational education, practical training, and rural development.
